Ep 012: Fun Fashion is Back: Gen Z and the DEATH of minimalism
Gen Z: the generation of empathetic, nihilistic, digitised individuals has successfully brought down the millennial MONSTER that is minimalism.
Raised in beige houses with beige dogs, we seem to be creeping closer to our Y2K roots of excessive layering, multiple accessories and, dare I say it, COLOUR.
Call it a trauma response to the pandemic or a surrendering to the consumerist society we live in, but maximalist is BACK. Of course, I relate everything to fashion, so what does that mean for your wardrobe?
It essentially means have fun. Despite our need for 24/7 Instagram worthiness, maximalism allows you to add a touch of eccentric into your outfit. Just as the colour pink got her renaissance with the Barbie movie last year, red is having her moment in 2024. Terms such as “Red Tights”, “Y2K” and “Bag Charms” have spiked on Pinterest over the summer.
The battle between minimalism and maximalism has been for generations. Elsa Schiaparelli fought against the 1920’s modernist movement in the 30’s with her eccentric and fun designs. The 90’s hit back at the 80’s “power-dressing” with simplistic chic. The rebellion of the hot, new generation continues.
Gen Z have a need to collect, commemorate, display: a win for the fashion lovers, and the sentimentalists.
