Ep. 002: We wore wigs on a night out! Here's what happened...
Like all good ideas these days, this one came from TikTok. Me and my friend bought ourselves two wigs to wear out on a Friday night.
If you know me in any capacity, you’ll know my favourite thing to do in the world is dress up and play around with my style. I love nothing more than spending hours (to my boyfriend’s dismay) getting ready to go out and reinventing myself with hair and makeup. My favourite part of a night out is deciding whether to blush or bronze. An apologetic note to my friends, but if you read my last post, you’ll understand <3. So not only was it a bit of fun, but I also decided to treat it as a bit of a social experiment.
My natural hair is dark brown, and I’ve always wondered; is it true that blondes have more fun? Would I get treated differently if I changed my hair colour?
(Obvious massive disclaimer here: I’m so lucky that I can choose to wear wigs, and play around with my style! I also hold nothing against my blonde queens. Except a teensy bit of envy. Let’s continue.)
The answer is a delicate yes. Maybe it was the tequila, but I truly felt people were more friendly and almost respectful. Weirdly, the vulnerability of my fake hair being potentially ripped from my head combined with the public’s gentle attitude towards me, I felt I was treated more…delicately? People seemed to give way more than normal, and smile a lot more. We also got free shots from the barman! On the other hand, I did feel quite patronised by some people, particularly door staff. I think the stereotype of the ditzy blonde is an outdated image that is still, unfortunately, very much prevalent.
So yes, we did get treated differently, but also we have to factor in the fact that we ourselves may have acted differently with the wigs on! I definitely felt a shift in character, like a Blair to a Serena. I wasn’t as confident as I usually might be, being self conscious that people might tell it was a wig. But also I think I was more light hearted and carefree than usual, and maybe even smiled at people more?! (as a girl with a massive RBF on a night out this was ground-breaking.)
So maybe it’s true, maybe blondes do have more fun…
This was such a fun experiment that I would definitely try again. It’s so exhilarating to instantly change up your look, which is why I love doing hair and makeup so much. It really shows how much of an effect your hair has on your mood and personality. Maybe we should start taking bad hair days more seriously….
Definitely have a go! Here’s the wig that I wore.
